The Local’s Support of MATCH and Homelessness Response in Warren County

Some of the visitors with MATCH at The Local's event space.

At The Local on Morford, we believe a restaurant can be much more than just a place to gather for a meal. We believe it can also be a post where conversations begin, relationships deepen, and real community progress can take shape.

That’s why we were honored to support MATCH (McMinnville Action to Create Housing), as local leaders, advocates, and community members gathered around an important goal: building a stronger response to homelessness in McMinnville and Warren County.

A Bit About MATCH

MATCH is an interfaith nonprofit serving neighbors experiencing homelessness in McMinnville and Warren County. It seeks to collaborate with organizations, including UCDD-UCHRA, H.O.M.E., Families in Crisis, the Family Resource Center, local governments, churches, and private citizens, to address homelessness in the region.

Why This Conversation Matters

Earlier this year, MATCH hosted a free screening of the documentary Beyond the Bridge at the Park Theater, followed by a town hall conversation focused on solutions to homelessness in our community. The film follows producers Don Sawyer and Tim Hashko as they travel across the United States, examining homelessness and highlighting communities that have implemented housing-focused solutions paired with supportive services.

That event’s coverage emphasized that the evening wasn’t just about raising awareness; it was about asking a harder and more important question: How can local leaders, service providers, and citizens work together to create a system that actually helps people move toward stable housing and lasting change?

The discussion brought together voices from across the community, including city, county, health, and regional leadership. According to reporting and MATCH’s own recap, participants included McMinnville Mayor Ryle Chastain, Warren County Executive Terry Bell, UCDD/UCHRA Executive Director Mark Farley, Ascension Saint Thomas regional leadership, and HOME Executive Director Sheila Fann.

What MATCH Is Working Toward

MATCH’s work supports advocacy, resource management, and program development, with a special focus on permanent supportive housing as an evidence-based path forward. The group says that this model combines permanent housing with supportive services and rental assistance, helping people stabilize and move forward.

The broader message behind Beyond the Bridge is that homelessness isn’t an individual failure or personal shortcoming. The film points instead to gaps in systems, coordination, access, and support. UCHRA’s write-up of the event noted that the documentary highlighted communities using housing-first approaches and supportive care to help people regain dignity as well as stability.

This kind of work ultimately doesn’t happen overnight, and it takes a lot of trust, collaboration, and willingness to keep showing up day after day.

The Local’s Role in Helping These Conversations Happen

As a small business in the heart of McMinnville, TN, we’re grateful to help create spaces for these conversations to take place.

We hosted a free reception with hors d’oeuvres for the producers of Beyond the Bridge to encourage local political leaders and interested community members to meet with them in person.

We also hosted the first roundtable luncheon with key local government and regional representatives, including county, city, and USDD/UCHRA leadership, on February 26th to continue the conversation about how McMinnville and Warren County can work together to address homelessness thoughtfully. The luncheon was held in our dedicated vent space across the street from The Local, and we provided complimentary lunch for all attendees.

Additionally, we’re proud to support the momentum behind the first Homeless Leadership Council Meeting, which is one of the first important steps in turning discussion into action.

Why This Matters to Us At The Local

For us, being a small local business is more than serving food and drinks. We’re proud to be a core part of the McMinnville community.

We care deeply about Warren County and the people who live, work, and hope for the better here. We also care about making room for meaningful conversations, especially when those conversations are centered on practical solutions, compassion, and making the community a better place.

MATCH wants to help develop systems that coordinate local services and strengthen collaboration. To us, supporting gatherings for these goals is one way to invest in progress.

Thank You to MATCH and Attendees

We want to say a huge THANK YOU to MATCH for beginning its work and conversation to McMinnville. We’re also grateful for the local leaders, advocates, and community members who gave their time and attention to such an important issue.

Community progress takes courage, follow-through, and a willingness to come to the table. We’re proud to offer that table.
